In a dramatic qualifying session marred by two red flags, Matt Payne of Grove Racing clinched a razor-thin provisional pole position for the Supercars Championship Bathurst 1000. Payne’s blistering lap time of 2:05.6452 edged out his closest rival, Cameron Waters in the Ford Mustang, by a mere 0.006 seconds.
The session saw intense action and unexpected setbacks. David Reynolds’ crash at the Dipper triggered the first red flag with just over 20 minutes remaining, while Will Davison’s incident at the same spot towards the end of the session brought out the second red flag, disrupting many drivers’ final flying laps.
Despite the challenges, Triple Eight’s Broc Feeney managed to secure the third position, leading the Chevrolet Camaro pack, just 0.0113 seconds behind Payne. Brodie Kostecki of Erebus Motorsport followed closely in fourth place, with Will Brown of Triple Eight rounding out the top five, 0.0194 seconds adrift.
Chaz Mostert, representing Walkinshaw Andretti United, claimed the sixth spot, a mere 0.1436 seconds off the pole time. Andre Heimgartner and Jac Le Brocq completed the top eight in their Chevrolets.
The stage is now set for the thrilling top ten shootout, scheduled to commence at 17:05 local time/08:05 CEST on Saturday. Anton De Pasquale and Richie Stanaway secured their spots in the shootout, ensuring a competitive grid for the main event at Bathurst.
